About Local Public Health

Local public health is an exciting field that focuses on keeping our communities safe and works to eliminate health inequities throughout Massachusetts. This site is designed to help you learn more about local public health: what it is, what it does, and its importance in our every day lives!

Local Public Health in Massachusetts

These pages will help you learn more about how local public health works in the Commonwealth. Massachusetts has a unique public health system, with each of our 351 cities and towns and two federally recognized tribes having their own board of health or health department.

Even though you may not know this, all of us living, working, and playing in Massachusetts interact with local public health every single day.
