Employee Spotlights

Shin-Yi has a diverse background in psychology and nursing. After earning her bachelor's degree in psychology, she attended nursing school in North Carolina. While working in a hospital, she recognized a pressing need for preventive care, which inspired her to pursue a Master’s in Public Health at Boston University. Following graduation, she spent a couple of years in a research program before joining the Health and Human Services Department in Newton, where she has dedicated the past nine years to community health and public service.

Connor McCombs serves as a Health Communications Officer for the City of Somerville, bringing a unique perspective to the Health and Human Services Department. Recently, we had the chance to discuss his path to public health communications and his approach to engaging the community through city resources and programs. Connor also offered insights for those looking to make a difference in community health.

Kelsey Ober is in her last semester at Boston University, where she’s pursuing a Master’s in Public Health with a focus on Epidemiology and Biostatistics. In this special edition of our Employee Spotlight, we highlight Kelsey’s role as an intern, marking her first professional experience in public health. We spoke with Kelsey about her excitement for applying her academic background to real-world health challenges, and she shared her journey into public health and her aspirations to make a meaningful impact through vital health initiatives while gaining invaluable hands-on experience.
