Job Overview
The Health Department seeks applicants for a Regional Health Inspector position serving the Town of South Hadley and the Central Pioneer Valley Health District, a regional public health collaborative serving the Cities of Chicopee and Holyoke and the Town of South Hadley. This position performs inspections and enforces applicable public health, sanitary, and environmental codes, regulations, statutes, and ordinances within South Hadley and, as part of the regional health district, provides supplemental inspection and enforcement services to communities within the regional Health District.
Summary of Responsibilities:
● Inspects restaurants, retail food establishments, temporary events, mobile food trucks, bakeries, food processing plants, caterers, nursing homes, etc. so as to ensure that food is being safely prepared and served.
● Inspects lodging and camps to ensure health and safety.
● Educates the public about relevant public health sanitary codes and regulations.
● Enforces Massachusetts Department of Public Health State Sanitary codes, all state of Massachusetts Environmental Code and various applicable State Regulations, State Statutes, and ordinances pertaining to Public Health Safety and Environmental Health.
● Maintains detailed records of inspectional activities and conditions/findings of properties or businesses.
● Responsible for ensuring that inspections and re-inspections are performed as scheduled, and that routine notifications are distributed.
● Collaborates with catchment area Health Directors to coordinate and achieve the goals and objectives of 413health within the framework of the grant’s annual work plan.
● Performs varied and responsible duties requiring the exercise of judgment and initiative to carry out assignments independently, analyze situations and conditions, and determine appropriate course of action from department guidelines and policies.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications:
The following requirements may be substituted by an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job:
● Associate’s degree in Science, Public Health, or a related field; 2 years related professional experience.
● Valid driver’s license and personal transportation required.
● The ability to obtain certification as a Registered Sanitarian within two years of hire; Existing knowledge of the State Sanitary Code and other relevant health regulations is preferred.
● Strong attention to detail and organizational skills; Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing to accurately explain findings and violations to community members; Ability to enforce and interpret regulations firmly, tactfully, and impartially. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and to mediate and handle interpersonal disputes effectively.
Status and Compensation:
This is a full-time (40 hours per week), FLSA non-exempt, non-union, benefited position funded through a combination of Town appropriation and grant funding. Appointment and continued employment are contingent upon annual Town appropriation and continued grant funding. The anticipated hiring range is $24-$27 per hour, depending on qualifications.
