Overview
- Location: Burlington, MA
- Compensation: $40.00 per hour
- Hours: Part-time, maximum 19 hours per week
- Status: Grant-funded position through June 2027, with potential to expand beyond that timeframe.
Reporting to the Director of Public Health for the Town of Burlington, the Health Inspector enforces the provisions of various federal, state, and local public health laws and regulations. This position serves the Tri-Ton Coalition, which is an inter-municipal shared services program serving the Towns of Burlington, Lexington, and Wilmington.
Essential Functions
The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following responsibilities:
- Administers and enforces the provisions of federal, state, and local public health laws, rules, regulations, and programs.
- Works collaboratively with permit holders and the public to achieve compliance, and reports directly to the Director of Public Health concerning compliance status.
- Conducts inspections of food service establishments, housing, nuisance complaints, and other areas required by law.
- Maintains accurate data and records using departmental records management software.
- Supplies and generates comprehensive inspection reports.
- Attends classes and other Town-offered training sessions to maintain current knowledge of required equipment and procedures.
- Performs other duties related to the primary scope of the position as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements to be considered for the role:
- An Associate’s degree in Science, Public Health, or a related field.
- The ability to obtain certification as a Registered Sanitarian within two years of hire.
- The ability to enforce and interpret regulations firmly, tactfully, and impartially.
- The physical capacity to perform light tasks, including occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling of objects and materials weighing up to 25 to 50 pounds.
- The physical ability to climb, reach, bend, and kneel frequently to perform essential inspection tasks.
